Why take this course?

People with disabilities, particularly intellectual disabilities, often experience poorer health outcomes than the rest of the population.  If that’s not alarming enough, let’s also consider that Support Workers – the ones like you on the frontline – don’t have any mandatory training in monitoring health needs, status, and access to health services.

This one hour webinar tailored to Support Workers, will support you to understand the role you play in supporting better health outcomes (hint: it’s more than just going to the doctor). You’ll leave with a practical set of tools, knowledge and resources to confidently support people with their health – and ultimately, work toward better outcomes.

What you’ll gain

In one hour, we’ll dive into:

  • Preventative health and health literacy, exploring the guide: ‘Health Care for People Who Need Extra Support’

  • The risks of not providing correct and timely support

  • How supporting someone with health needs more than just going to the doctor

Dr Rachel Skoss

Rachel is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Health Research, University of Notre Dame Australia. Informed by her equally important role as primary carer of a young person with intellectual disability, Rachel’s applied research and evaluation focus is on the interface between the disability sector and mainstream services in the health, mental health, and education sectors.

Rachel uses a health literacy approach to improve health and wellbeing outcomes of people who may be considered vulnerable and build the capacity in front-line workers and caregivers. As well as engaging with people with lived experience and other key stakeholders to ensure she’s asking the right questions, Rachel’s approach to translation includes taking on various roles in systemic advocacy, and carer and consumer representation on advisory/working groups in the health, mental health, and disability sectors to understand the bigger picture. She contributes to the national health and disability reforms via national stakeholder groups and has held governance roles in the disability sector.
