Recognising and Building Capacity in Complex SIL

Why take this course?

In SIL and legacy placements, the idea of “capacity building” often doesn’t fit the standard narrative of skill-building or increased independence. That leaves teams unsure, participants overlooked and plan funding at risk. And when progress is hard to define or measure, it becomes easy for the NDIA to say no.

But capacity building does happen - just not in the way we usually expect to see it. It may look like maintaining function to avoiding regression, growing trust or improving emotional regulation. When we learn to recognise it in its less obvious but equally important forms, we strengthen both the quality of support and our ability to advocate for it.

This online workshop will help you reframe your understanding of capacity building through the lens of participants with complex or long-term needs, offering language, practice strategies and examples that better reflect this work. All while aligning with Reasonable and Necessary criteria and the pressures of plan reviews, documentation and funding decisions.

Led by experienced DSC facilitators, this is a values-driven, practical workshop that helps teams describe impact (without overstating outcomes) and protect the supports participants rely on.
