Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced his new cabinet today. To be honest, the straightforward question of ‘who is the Minister for the NDIS?’ has proven itself to be surprisingly complex (and isn’t that just the NDIS in a nutshell?). But this is what we know so far:
Mark Butler will be the new Minister for Disability and the NDIS, as well as Health and Ageing. He will sit in Cabinet.
NSW Senator Jenny McAllister will be the standalone Minister for the NDIS. She will be in the Outer Ministry and will not sit in Cabinet.
Former Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek will take on the Social Services portfolio. It is not clear whether DSS will retain responsibility for implementing foundational supports, or whether this will move to Mark Butler’s new portfolio.
We’ll keep you informed as we know (and more importantly, understand) more.
