What is a plan variation?

A Plan variation involves making changes or variations to the person’s current NDIS plan, without the need for a full plan reassessment

When a participant has experienced significant changes to their NDIS goals and support needs, and they need a brand-new NDIS plan developed, they may require a plan reassessment instead of a plan variation. 

A plan variation can be requested by a participant at any time, or may be initiated by the NDIA (such as following a participant check-in conversation). Plan variations may occur:

  • To correct a small or technical error

  • To change the plan reassessment (end) date 

  • To change the statement of participant supports in relation to funds management or other aspects of the plan

  • To make changes to an existing stated support

  • If crisis or emergency funding is required as a result of a significant change to support needs

  • Following new information in response to an NDIA request (e.g. assistive technology or home modifications)

  • Minor variation to increase the funding of supports in the plan.

Pardon the jargon

Previously these were called “light touch plan reviews”. A plan variation may also be referred to as an “s47”, referring to Section 47 of the NDIS Act.


How to request a plan variation

A person can request a plan variation through the Change of Details or Change of Situation form or call the NDIS on 1800 800 110.


When will the NDIA respond?

If a person asks the NDIA to vary their plan, the NDIA must respond within 21 days by:

  • Deciding to vary the person’s plan; or

  • Deciding not to vary the person’s plan; or

  • Letting the person know that the NDIA needs more time to determine whether the plan needs to be varied.

If the NDIA varies the person’s plan, they will get a new copy of the varied plan within 7 days.

What if I disagree with the decision?

The person may request an internal review of the NDIA’s decision, within 3 months of the date of the original decision to either:

  • Vary a participant plan; or

  • Not vary a participant plan

The request to review an NDIA decision can be done by using this form or calling the NDIA on 1800 800 110.

Alternatively, the person might choose to complete another request for a plan variation, alongside additional evidence.
